Registration Instructions:

Suggested protocol:

1. Baseline serum cortisol (1 x SST tube room temp) and plasma ACTH (1 x EDTA tube ON ICE)

2. Synacthen is administered (by doctor)

3. 30-minute post-Synacthen: 30-minute cortisol (1 x SST tube room temp)

4. 60-minute post-Synacthen: 60-minute cortisol (1 x SST tube room temp)

 

Pathology reception:

When registering SYN, three specimen labels will print for cortisol and "COR" does not need to be registered.

If a sample for plasma ACTH is not received, proceed with SYN.

Collection & Request Instructions:

All samples must be clearly marked with patient identification, collection date and time. Collection times must also be clearly written on request form.

Transport Instructions:

SST tubes (Cortisol): Collect and send to laboratory at room temperature.

EDTA tube (ACTH): Collect on ice. Send to laboratory immediately.

Processing Instructions:

SST tube (Cortisol) - centrifuge immediately.

EDTA tube (ACTH) - centrifuge, aliquot and freeze plasma immediately. ACTH specimen is sent to Alfred Pathology.
