Registration Instructions:

FOBT on inpatients will only be performed AFTER approval from the gastroenterology registrar. The test will only be performed if the indication is clearly stated, AND the name of the gastroenterology registrar giving approval is provided. Requests that do not meet the stated criteria will be registered as REJ and not tested.

Additional Notes:

False positives may occur through dietary factors. The patient should not ingest any iron medications, or any food prepared from red meat, for three days prior to the test.

False negatives may be caused by ingestion of large doses of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C).
