Routine histology/tissue samples:
• Collect in 10% Neutral Buffered formalin in a sealable container. The volume of formalin should be 10 times of the tissue. This allows for adequate fixation of tissue in prompt manner to facilitate best turnaround times
• Specimen Containers are to be labelled with a minimum of 3 patient identifiers and the specimen type. Labels are to be placed on the side of containers NOT the lids to ensure they are not lost or misplaced during transit or storage.
• All specimens for Histology are to be placed on the same EMR order/Request slip.
• Clear and effective clinical notes should be provided to help achieve appropriate handling/preparation of specimens.
Fresh specimens for histology and other testing (e.g. MCS, flow cytometry, chromosomal analysis)
* Specimens that are for tests IN ADDITION to histology (anatomical pathology) should be ideally split and sent for different testing prior to arrival at laboratory, however if this cannot be achieved, the following steps should be followed:
• Collect specimen fresh and kept cool, but not frozen. Avoid the use of saline, if possible.
• Specimen Containers are to be labelled with a minimum of 3 patient identifiers and the specimen type. Labels are to be placed on the side of containers NOT the lids to ensure they are not lost or misplaced during transit or storage.
• Specimens are to be delivered to Central Specimen Reception (CSR) promptly |
