Bronchial brushing smears

Label a glass slide in pencil on the frosted end with the patients’ full name, UR number, date of birth, and  specimen collection site.

When the lesion has been brushed, immediately, gently and rapidly rotate the brush on the surface of the prepared slide. The specimen should occupy the central portion of the slide.

Immediately spray the whole of the slide with spray fixative from a distance of approximately 20cm.

Allow the slide to dry. Place the slide into a Cytomailer and secure closed. Place the Cytomailer(s) into a biohazard bag for safe transportation.

Detach the brush tip and place into labeled Formalin Pot. Place into a separate biohazard bag for safe transportation.

Bronchial Washings and Bronchoalveolar lavages (BAL).

Please note: Specimen/s can be shared with Microbiology and Flow Cytometry. Please check other laboratory collection requirements.

Specimens are to be collected in a Bronchial Suction Trap Container.

Clearly label the collection container with patient’s full name, DOB, and date, time and site of collection.

Specimen containers should be tightly sealed and in pathology specimen biohazard bags for safe transportation.
