Please note: Specimen/s can be shared with Microbiology, Biochemistry and Flow Cytometry. Please check other laboratory collection requirements.

Smear/Slide Preparation: Label glass slide in pencil on the frosted end with the patients full name, date of birth, UR number and the specimen site of collection.

When the lesion has been brushed, immediately, gently and rapidly rotate the brush on the surface of the prepared slide. Care should be exercised not to press too hard,in order to prevent crushing of the cells. The cellular material should occupy the central portion of the slide. After the slides are prepared, immediately spray the entire slide (distance of approximately 20cm) with spray fixative (cytology fixative/95% alcohol). Rapid and thorough fixation is crucial.

Allow the slide to dry.

Place the slide into a Cytomailer and secure closed.

Place the Cytomailer(s) into a biohazards bag for safe transportation.

Detach the brush tip and place into labeled Formalin Pot. Place into a separate biohazard bag for safe transportation.

Fluid collection: Clearly label the collection container (70ml pot) with patient’s full name, DOB, UR number, date, time and site of collection.

Collect fluid in labelled pot, and tightly close the lid to avoid spillage/leaking.

Place the specimen pot into a biohazard bag for safe transportation.

Transport Instructions:Room Temperature

Please ensure Cytology specimens are sent in a separate Biohazard bag from any accompanying Histology biopsy specimens (Formalin pots). Formalin vapour affects cytology specimen preservation.

Assay Frequency:Weekdays
