Slide/Smear Preparation

Label glass slides in pencil on the frosted end with the patients full name and date of birth.

Express a small drop of the discharge material onto one end of a prepared slide.

A second prepared slide is placed on top of the first one and the two slides are gently separated to produce an even spread of the material.

Care should be exercised not to press too hard in order to prevent crushing of the cells.

The material should occupy the central portion of the slide.

After the two slides are separated, immediately spray the whole of the slide with spray fixative from a distance of at least 20cm , and leave to dry.

Place the  slide mailer/s in a biohazard bag for transportation.
