Nerve Biopsy Specimens

Nerve biopsy specimens for neurodegenerative studies are processed by the Victorian Neuromuscular Laboratory Service (VNLS) which are located within Anatomical Pathology at the Alfred.

VNLS were previously known as the State Neuropathology Service (SNS) at the University of Melbourne. SNS relocated to the Alfred to become part of the Alfred Pathology Service on July 1st 2011.

Nerve Biopsy Kits

The Victorian Neuromuscular Laboratory Service provides nerve biopsy kits for appropriate specimen sampling and packaging. It is essential to use these kits for sample collection as they contain the appropriate fixative, specimen containers and a nerve weight.

Nerve Biopsy Kits are available free of charge from the VNLS (telephone 9076 5448) or contact  the Alfred histology lab (telephone 907 62476). Please contact VNLS 48 hours prior to the procedure to ensure a kit is available. Kits can be delivered via courier to external requestors at no charge.

Each kit contains full detailed instructions on the collection procedure.

Specimen Dispatch

Please return the nerve biopsy kit and completed paperwork to Anatomical Pathology via Alfred Pathology Central Specimen Reception.

Important Note To Clinicians:

The Neuromuscular Laboratory must receive samples BEFORE 4pm Monday to Friday to enable optimal handling and processing to occur. Clinicians must allow sufficient transport time when scheduling procedures.
