Sputum Specimens for Cytology

Please note: Specimen/s can be shared with Microbiology. Please check other laboratory collection requirements. 

3 specimens, on 3 successive days, should be collected.

Label specimen pot with patient full name, date of birth, date and time of collection

Morning specimens result from the overnight accumulation of secreta and provides the best diagnostic results.  The sputum should be collected before eating, drinking and brushing of the teeth.

Saliva, spittle or post nasal discharge is not suitable

Induction/physiotherapy should be used if required.

The sputum should be delivered to the laboratory as quickly as possible to ensure accurate cytological assessment.  Keep the sputum refrigerated until delivery to the laboratory or collection centre. 

Place the specimen pot(s) in a biohazard bag for transport.
