Collection & Request Instructions:

Body Cavity Effusion Fluids for Cytology

Sample may be shared with Microbiology, Biochemistry,Flow Cytometry. Please check other laboratory collection requirements.

Preferably send more than 150ml. Smaller volumes will also accepted, however small volumes may reduce the sensitivity of cytological analysis.

Ancillary Tests: Immunohistochemistry (Tumor markers) or NGS (Tumor mutational profile) If ancillary tests need to be performed a large volume is required, and will be accepted in non-leaking fluid collection containers up to 2L.

Do not use Serres suction containers/cannisters. The use of these has been reported to cause an artefact that mimics mucin, which may cause an erroneous diagnosis.

Transport Instructions:Room Temperature
Assay Frequency:Weekdays
